Lamb Weston's European JV to buy Oerlemans Foods' potato division

FBR Staff Writer Published 28 April 2017

Lamb-Weston/Meijer, the European joint venture of Lamb Weston, has agreed to acquire Oerlemans Foods Nederland's potato business for an undisclosed price.

The acquisition will meet both the surging demand for frozen potato products and the growth ambitions of its customers.

Lamb Weston/Meijer is the European joint venture formed by US-based ConAgra Foods Lamb Weston and Netherlands-based Meijer Frozen Food.

Headquartered in Kruiningen, The Netherlands, the company apart from being an ingredient solution provider, is into supply of frozen potato, sweet potato, appetizer and vegetable products in Europe, the Middle East, Africa (EMEA) and Brazil.

For Oerlemans Foods, the sale of the potato division is expected to help it focus only on its frozen fresh fruits and vegetables business and further consolidate its position in the segment.

The acquisition also includes a frozen potato processing plant in Broekhuizenvorst in Netherlands. The Broekhuizenvorst potato processing plant will add 185 million pounds of production capacity to Lamb Weston/Meijer’s existing network, and is expected to create scope for further expansion.

Lamb Weston/Meijer CEO Bas Albas said: “The diverse customer base of Oerlemans Foods’ potato division and the location of its factory in Broekhuizenvorst, makes this a strategic asset to further shape our own growth ambitions and those of our customers.”

After close of the acquisition which is likely to be later in the year, Lamb-Weston/Meijer will take its count of Dutch production facilities to four. It also has a production facility in UK and one in Austria.

Lamb Weston CEO Tom Werner said: “Our partnership with Lamb-Weston/Meijer, together with our operations in North America, allows us to reach customers around the world from key locations in the United States and Europe.

“This strategic acquisition is consistent with our investments to strengthen our position in the global industry, and to better support the increasing demand for frozen potato products and growth ambitions of our customers in Europe and abroad.”
